“Scopa (in English: Clean Sweep) is the national card game of Italy and makes for a great two player card game. Scopa Free for Windows is my freeware implementation of this great game. Traditionally, this game is played with an Italian 40-card deck with suits in Swords, Batons, Cups and Coins, and that is how this version is programmed. Note that the Italian deck ranks the Cavall (Knight) below the King, but above the Fante. In version 1.00, I used an international deck stripped down to 40 cards (eights, nines and tens are removed and Jack=8, Queen=9 and King=10). If you wish to play this game when you are not at your computer, you may strip an American 52-card deck to get the resultant International deck. The table below shows the mappings between the Italian 40-card deck and the stripped-down International deck:

Another thing that really makes Scopa Free v1.06 enjoyable for me is how it manages to stay interesting even after playing it multiple times. Many games feel repetitive after a while, but here, the experience still feels fresh because of the small details and different ways you can approach the gameplay. As you continue playing, you naturally start improving and understanding the mechanics better, which makes everything feel more rewarding. I also appreciate the balance the game maintains—it’s not too difficult, but it’s not too easy either. You can play it casually for a short break or spend longer sessions without getting bored. That flexibility is one of the biggest reasons why I keep coming back to Scopa Free v1.06. Overall, it’s the kind of game that doesn’t just entertain you for a moment, but actually gives you a consistently enjoyable experience every time you play.
