                Release date: March 5, 1992
——————- From the Desk of the Editor ————————-
Hi, this is Eric Hsiao, the creator of GIF News.  Thanks for taking the
time to download the March/April 1992 issue of GIF News.  In this issue,
we have two VGA (640×400 256 color) pages instead of one.  Inside those
two pages you will find reviews of two of shareware’s hottest games
complete with 256 color screen shots.  Also, you’ll find articles on:
   * The new USR HST 16.8K modem
   * V.32bis modem for $399 list
   * Apogee’s immediate plans for the PC shareware game market
   * The Multi-Media section
   * Industry News
   * Galactix and Scorched Earth v1.1 reviews
So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.  In the next issue, we will look at
sound cards, and what to expect for the summer of ’92.  Included will be
a comprehensive review of the AdLib Gold sound card, a board that promises
to be the driving force behind the next generation of sound cards.  We hope
to provide comparison specs between the AdLib Gold, the Gravis Ultrasound,
the Sound Blaster Pro Version 2.0, and the Pro Audio Spectrum II.  So, look
for GN92-05.ZIP during the first week of May.

    If you enjoy reading the past SIX issues of GIF News, please consider
a small donation of $5 (US) to cover my expenses of uploading GIF News to
long distance Bulletin Boards across the country.  Also, please upload
GIF News to a couple of your favorite boards.  Any bit of distribution
helps. Also, a PostScript Laser Printer would really be appreciated
here.  It would enable us to send hardcopies of GIF News to those who
want it on paper.  If you know of any office/computer supply auctions,
please let me know.

Also, interested in megs of TrakBlaster .MOD files without the  cost of
downloading them long distance? Read the file GN-DISKS.TXT for an offer
you can’t refuse.  MOD files can also be played using programs such as
ModPlay, JMPlayer, Registered Scream Tracker, Trak Blaster, and other
programs capable of handling the Amiga Noise/Sound Tracker sound format.
    Special  note  to  Internet  readers:  If you  would  like  to be a
GIF News  subscriber,  just  send me  E-mail  and I will add you to the
mailing list.  GIF News  will be  uuencoded and sent to you via E-mail.
Many  uudecoders exist  for both unix and ms-dos platforms.  If you are
unable  to handle  the .ZIP format  on your machine,  let me know and I
will send you the file in an LZH, ZOO, or ARC archive.
    Also, if you’re anonymously FTP’ing, and come across some files you
think  might be  GIF News.  You can  easily tell  which issue  is up by
looking at the filename.  For example, the filename is:
    gn92-03.zip  <– The gn stands for GIF News, the 92 re-
                     presents the year, and the 03 is the
                     month (March in this case).
So be sure to look for gn92-05.zip in the beginning of May.

Another thing that really makes GIF News Issue # 19 [March/April 1992] enjoyable for me is how it manages to stay interesting even after playing it multiple times. Many games feel repetitive after a while, but here, the experience still feels fresh because of the small details and different ways you can approach the gameplay. As you continue playing, you naturally start improving and understanding the mechanics better, which makes everything feel more rewarding. I also appreciate the balance the game maintains—it’s not too difficult, but it’s not too easy either. You can play it casually for a short break or spend longer sessions without getting bored. That flexibility is one of the biggest reasons why I keep coming back to GIF News Issue # 19 [March/April 1992]. Overall, it’s the kind of game that doesn’t just entertain you for a moment, but actually gives you a consistently enjoyable experience every time you play.
