RoboForge is a 3D game that lets you construct sophisticated virtual robots and train them for combat. The robots are constructed from a huge library of over 300 mechanical and organic parts. To ‘forge’ a bot you simply click components together. Components include Joints (moving servos), Sensors, CPUs, Energy Generators, Weapons, Shielding and passive Limbs.
RoboForge Wizards allow you to quickly construct your first robot by selecting from chassis and limb options. The finished robot can be fine-tuned by adding new limbs, paint and texture and trained for offensive and defensive moves (all in 3D).
There are both Professional and Amateur Online Tournaments featuring prizes (including money for the Professional Tournaments) to test your creations against other pre-programmed robots
The movement of the limbs and damage caused is calculated using realistic physics. The robot sensor systems have scope and range. Damage is based on point of impact inertia and realistic resultant physics are calculated (i.e. limb recoil).
Whilst RoboForge has a significant online component, much of the game play is offline and involves the design, construction and testing of your bots. Once you feel you have created a worthy contender, you go online from within the game, and enter your Robot in tournaments or go up against players, one on one, in the RoboForge challenge rooms.
On the technical side, RoboForge is developed 100% in Java and is like no other Java game you will have ever seen. It works with OpenGL and Direct3D and is able to run on all Win32 platforms. The minimum spec PC required is 200Mhz CPU, 64MB RAM and an 8MB 3D Card. Obviously a higher spec machine will be preferable.

Another thing that really makes RoboForge v1.23 enjoyable for me is how it manages to stay interesting even after playing it multiple times. Many games feel repetitive after a while, but here, the experience still feels fresh because of the small details and different ways you can approach the gameplay. As you continue playing, you naturally start improving and understanding the mechanics better, which makes everything feel more rewarding. I also appreciate the balance the game maintains—it’s not too difficult, but it’s not too easy either. You can play it casually for a short break or spend longer sessions without getting bored. That flexibility is one of the biggest reasons why I keep coming back to RoboForge v1.23. Overall, it’s the kind of game that doesn’t just entertain you for a moment, but actually gives you a consistently enjoyable experience every time you play.
