This game is a remake of and tribute to “Crossfire” by Jay Sullivan
and Chuck Benton which was published in 1983 for the Commodore 64
by Sierra Online.
After activating the START button on the title screen, the game begins. Control your red and white ship using the arrow keys (up, down, left,
right). Fire your gun using the Ctrl key (or space bar). You can fire
without moving by first pressing and holding Ctrl and then pressing one
of the arrow keys.
Now try to shoot all enemies. Avoid bumping into them and avoid their
bullets. Touching an enemy or its bullet means you lose a life. An extra
life is awarded for every 5000 points you score. Extra points can be
collected by running over the red “lantern” bonus objects. These appear
after you have fired a certain number of bullets, and they also disappear
again after another amount of bullets being fired.
Keep an eye on your ammo level at the bottom right corner of the screen.
When you are about to run out of bullets, an ammo bonus object (4 white
dots) will appear somewhere on the screen; collect this to restore your
ammo.

Another thing that really makes Gridfire enjoyable for me is how it manages to stay interesting even after playing it multiple times. Many games feel repetitive after a while, but here, the experience still feels fresh because of the small details and different ways you can approach the gameplay. As you continue playing, you naturally start improving and understanding the mechanics better, which makes everything feel more rewarding. I also appreciate the balance the game maintains—it’s not too difficult, but it’s not too easy either. You can play it casually for a short break or spend longer sessions without getting bored. That flexibility is one of the biggest reasons why I keep coming back to Gridfire. Overall, it’s the kind of game that doesn’t just entertain you for a moment, but actually gives you a consistently enjoyable experience every time you play.
