Death Illustrated is built on the Cube engine but unlike so many other games from that engine there is no bright colouring and no bloodsplatter. Death Illustrated is all about atmosphere. And at that it excels. The dark greyish atmosphere gives a creepy feel and the music does the rest to get your body off the chair and you hands tingling with anticipation waiting to see what will hit you next. Different enemies, not all good unfortunately, but different nonetheless, hit you from all angles, and you can be certain that when you feel superior sneaking up on an enemy from behind and he hasn’t noticed you, then you should actually be checking your six to see if at the exact same moment some enemy is not creeping up on you.
Some agitation has arisen from the fact that you cannot see your shots, but that can also be seen as a reality-enhancer. It would however be the only thing that would give you the impression of reality in this game.
You should try this out to see something else and maybe to get your blood flowing faster and your heart rate up a bit. But as good as this game is, there is no doubt that we have better FPS-games on this site. But there is also no doubt that you could do a lot worse than Death Illustrated.
Another thing that really makes Death Illustrated enjoyable for me is how it manages to stay interesting even after playing it multiple times. Many games feel repetitive after a while, but here, the experience still feels fresh because of the small details and different ways you can approach the gameplay. As you continue playing, you naturally start improving and understanding the mechanics better, which makes everything feel more rewarding. I also appreciate the balance the game maintains—it’s not too difficult, but it’s not too easy either. You can play it casually for a short break or spend longer sessions without getting bored. That flexibility is one of the biggest reasons why I keep coming back to Death Illustrated. Overall, it’s the kind of game that doesn’t just entertain you for a moment, but actually gives you a consistently enjoyable experience every time you play.
