This version of Colditz Escape has been rewritten and extended
using Philip Richmond’s Creative Adventure Toolkit utility.
The object of the game is to get all the items needed to be able
to escape from the castle and to travel through hostile
countryside to Switzerland and so home to England.
To do this you must think and act as a prisoner, be always on
your guard and make sure that the Germans do not find any escape
materials on you and do not leave them lying around. Talk to your
fellow prisoners (more than once). When you are ready to escape
try to think ahead. Is it safe to move? How do you look to people?
Are you carrying anything that makes you stand out? Should you do
something before going into crowded places such as railway
stations? If you are captured outside the castle you are returned
to the castle and so have to start again.There are many ways to
complete the game within the castle but on escaping the game is
more lineal.
All the usual commands are accepted including the multiple ‘all
except’ command. The ‘z’ command will repeat the previous command.
Typing the first four letters of words that are more than four
letters long will be accepted. The command ‘go (location)’ will
send the player directly to certain locations within the castle
only.
Colditz Escape! is a freeware, open-source remake of Escape from Colditz, an isometric adventure game released in 1991 for the Amiga.

Another thing that really makes Colditz Escape! enjoyable for me is how it manages to stay interesting even after playing it multiple times. Many games feel repetitive after a while, but here, the experience still feels fresh because of the small details and different ways you can approach the gameplay. As you continue playing, you naturally start improving and understanding the mechanics better, which makes everything feel more rewarding. I also appreciate the balance the game maintains—it’s not too difficult, but it’s not too easy either. You can play it casually for a short break or spend longer sessions without getting bored. That flexibility is one of the biggest reasons why I keep coming back to Colditz Escape!. Overall, it’s the kind of game that doesn’t just entertain you for a moment, but actually gives you a consistently enjoyable experience every time you play.
