However, attempting to probe any deeper into what happened to these poor souls during their ascent up the tower always leads to the same thing – a glassy stare into nothingness, and the same monotone phrase muttered over and over again until a sedative can be administered:
“De Toren.”<<
De Toren is a platform game. The tower (“de toren” in Dutch) is divided into eighteen multi-floor levels and the goal in each is to reach the highest floor, called “rest area”. You must also do it in time and have enough points to be promoted to next level, if not – round starts from the beginning. Points are collected by highliting floor tiles, so the general strategy is to step on as many tiles as possible (watching the time). Combo meter rises with each tile – so you get more points for each step, but if you get in contact with enemy object or step on the same tile again – it drops.
There’s no save option, so game must be finished in one go.
Another thing that really makes De Toren enjoyable for me is how it manages to stay interesting even after playing it multiple times. Many games feel repetitive after a while, but here, the experience still feels fresh because of the small details and different ways you can approach the gameplay. As you continue playing, you naturally start improving and understanding the mechanics better, which makes everything feel more rewarding. I also appreciate the balance the game maintains—it’s not too difficult, but it’s not too easy either. You can play it casually for a short break or spend longer sessions without getting bored. That flexibility is one of the biggest reasons why I keep coming back to De Toren. Overall, it’s the kind of game that doesn’t just entertain you for a moment, but actually gives you a consistently enjoyable experience every time you play.
