Emergency Room—The first in a series of RealPlay games from Legacy Software and IBM emerges as one of the industry’s top entertainment products.
The patient is critically wounded and as the attending physician, his life is in your hands. The next few minutes are crucial and your decisions could mean the difference between life and death.
Targeting ages 12 and up, this multifaceted entertainment/educational CD-ROM product integrates live-action video, 3-D graphics, and a comprehensive database of 400 medical cases ranging from level 1, (a simple abrasion or contusion) to level 5 (code blue; a life-threatening injury). The five levels of difficulty allow players to progress from a first year medical student to Chief of Staff by successfully examining, diagnosing and treating patients. The database was developed by Dr. Elizabeth Nolan, M.D., a graduate of Yale Medical School and a recipient of a doctorate degree in child development from Harvard University.
An enthusiastic, interactive “hospital staff” (which features among the actors, Perry King of Melrose Place and Walter Olkewicz of Grace Under Fire) guides players through the game, providing them with vital feedback and advice on the consequences and results of their medical decisions. In each case, players are exposed to information that is typical of the discipline, as well as the appropriate procedures and strategies utilized by medical practitioners.

Another thing that really makes Emergency Room Demo enjoyable for me is how it manages to stay interesting even after playing it multiple times. Many games feel repetitive after a while, but here, the experience still feels fresh because of the small details and different ways you can approach the gameplay. As you continue playing, you naturally start improving and understanding the mechanics better, which makes everything feel more rewarding. I also appreciate the balance the game maintains—it’s not too difficult, but it’s not too easy either. You can play it casually for a short break or spend longer sessions without getting bored. That flexibility is one of the biggest reasons why I keep coming back to Emergency Room Demo. Overall, it’s the kind of game that doesn’t just entertain you for a moment, but actually gives you a consistently enjoyable experience every time you play.
