In medieval times, four small kingdoms came to power at the same time. Each of them developed a strong army, built up an impressive Keep, and surrounded it with a defensive Moat. As fate would have it, these four kingdoms all bordered the same small piece of land. Over time, alliances were formed and broken, threats were made and enemies were declared. Now the inevitable time has come: All four kingdoms will meet upon the battlefield for war.
“Keeps & Moats Chess” is a 4-player variant of Chess played upon a unique game board. While it uses the same pieces as traditional Chess (except for one small adjustment), new movement and capture rules, and changes to how Pawns and Kings are treated makes this a whole new game.
The rules will be quick and easy to learn for players who already know how to play Chess (although the playstyle and strategy are a bit different). However, if a player doesn’t know how to play Chess, it should still be easy to learn to play this variant — all rules and piece movement are given in these help files, and the game’s interface displays the pieces that have available moves, and what those available moves are.

Another thing that really makes Keeps & Moats Chess enjoyable for me is how it manages to stay interesting even after playing it multiple times. Many games feel repetitive after a while, but here, the experience still feels fresh because of the small details and different ways you can approach the gameplay. As you continue playing, you naturally start improving and understanding the mechanics better, which makes everything feel more rewarding. I also appreciate the balance the game maintains—it’s not too difficult, but it’s not too easy either. You can play it casually for a short break or spend longer sessions without getting bored. That flexibility is one of the biggest reasons why I keep coming back to Keeps & Moats Chess. Overall, it’s the kind of game that doesn’t just entertain you for a moment, but actually gives you a consistently enjoyable experience every time you play.
