Monuments of Mars v 1.0
By Ed Britton (Figbash@
This is a remake of Monuments of Mars Episode 1, which was originally published by Apogee software.  It was created for the Retro Remakes competition of 2008.
-= Story =-
(From the intro of Monuments of Mars):
NASA has sent several manned missions to explore the mysterious monuments of Mars.  However, each mission has ended in disaster:  The crew of each mission has failed to return, and no one at NASA knows why!
You are the last hope.  Can you explore the strange Martian structures and reveal their secrets?  Can you survive to discover what happened to the men who manned the previous missions?
Your computer guided ship guides itself past deadly meteors and into the strong gravitational pull of the Earth-sized red planet.
It won’t be long now, you think to yourself, until the secrets of the monuments of Mars are finally revealed.
-= Controls =-
Your character movement is controlled with the left and right arrow keys.
Z will cause your character to jump
X will shoot your character’s laser
Enter will activate switches
Q will destroy your character and start him back at the beginning of the level
-= How to Play =-
You must find your way to the exit of each level, while avoiding the various traps and creatures in the monuments, and attempting to gain as many points as possible.
Half the fun is discovering the secrets of the objects in the monuments, so be sure to experiment and explore.
Be sure to conserve your ammo as much as possible!
-= Troubleshooting =-
This remake uses a feature of fancy videocards to provide real time lighting.  It should autodetect if your videocard doesn’t support it, but if the game seems not to run try using Mars – Static Lighting.exe instead of Mars.exe.  This will disable the real time lights but keeps the normal lights.  If your machine is too slow for this, please try Mars – No Lighting.exe.

Another thing that really makes Monuments of Mars (Remake) enjoyable for me is how it manages to stay interesting even after playing it multiple times. Many games feel repetitive after a while, but here, the experience still feels fresh because of the small details and different ways you can approach the gameplay. As you continue playing, you naturally start improving and understanding the mechanics better, which makes everything feel more rewarding. I also appreciate the balance the game maintains—it’s not too difficult, but it’s not too easy either. You can play it casually for a short break or spend longer sessions without getting bored. That flexibility is one of the biggest reasons why I keep coming back to Monuments of Mars (Remake). Overall, it’s the kind of game that doesn’t just entertain you for a moment, but actually gives you a consistently enjoyable experience every time you play.
