Towns implements a puzzle presented in the Games column of the April ’93 issue of OMNI magazine by Scott Morris. It is in turn based on a more general puzzle presented by M. Kontesevich at the 1981 Tournament of the Towns, an intercity mathematics competition, in the former Soviet Union. The object of the game is to vacate the six blue squares in the lower left corner of the playing field of any marbles. When a marble is removed a marble must be placed in the square directly above it, and another placed in the square directly to the right. Only one marble can occupy a square. If a marble cannot be removed because either of those adjacent squares are already occupied, it is colored red. If the marble is free to be removed, then it is colored green.

Another thing that really makes Towns v1.1 enjoyable for me is how it manages to stay interesting even after playing it multiple times. Many games feel repetitive after a while, but here, the experience still feels fresh because of the small details and different ways you can approach the gameplay. As you continue playing, you naturally start improving and understanding the mechanics better, which makes everything feel more rewarding. I also appreciate the balance the game maintains—it’s not too difficult, but it’s not too easy either. You can play it casually for a short break or spend longer sessions without getting bored. That flexibility is one of the biggest reasons why I keep coming back to Towns v1.1. Overall, it’s the kind of game that doesn’t just entertain you for a moment, but actually gives you a consistently enjoyable experience every time you play.
