Vintage Hyperactive is a remodeled QBASIC game, originally created circa 1993-1994. The PC version of Vintage Hyperactive allows you to play both the remodeled concept (decent) and the port of the original game (not so good). Since only the remodeled game is likely to stir much of an interest, the original port won’t be covered in this FAQ.
The idea behind the game is to deliver quality gameplay but without huge development costs. Since randomization is a fundamental part of the game design, there was no need to design and test 100 levels with the thoroughness required of the major titles. The overall time to port the original game AND design, code, and test the remodeled version was 3 months–solo developer–part time. I kid you not.
If ASCII characters aren’t your cup of tea, that’s too bad. Early games for the PC had to make do with what hardware you had available. This game, despite being designed in Win32, could actually run on an 8086, with a crappy monitor, and with a decent speed. Once again, I kid you not.
About a year after making this game, I released version 1.1, which features a better menu interface, selectable starting skill levels, bonus stages, mouse and joystick support, as well as graphics that replaced text characters in the Win32 graphics build. Should be more comfortable to play for those people who hate using the keyboard to play games.
The game has an old-school arcade style. Perhaps Berzerk is the closest match. Anyway, if you don’t know what old-school means, I’ll tell you. The game has no plot, and is all about blowing things up and getting points.

Another thing that really makes Vintage Hyperactive v1.1 enjoyable for me is how it manages to stay interesting even after playing it multiple times. Many games feel repetitive after a while, but here, the experience still feels fresh because of the small details and different ways you can approach the gameplay. As you continue playing, you naturally start improving and understanding the mechanics better, which makes everything feel more rewarding. I also appreciate the balance the game maintains—it’s not too difficult, but it’s not too easy either. You can play it casually for a short break or spend longer sessions without getting bored. That flexibility is one of the biggest reasons why I keep coming back to Vintage Hyperactive v1.1. Overall, it’s the kind of game that doesn’t just entertain you for a moment, but actually gives you a consistently enjoyable experience every time you play.
