Mazes are put into groups of similar mazes, and have the name of the group followed by the number of the maze. Higher numbers within the group indicates a higher difficulty level. For example, the fifth maze in the gems set would be called “GEMS5.MAZ” and would be harder than “GEMS4.MAZ” but easier than “GEMS6.MAZ”.
MAZESET1
This maze set is included in the shareware version of Master of the Maze. This directory contains 29 mazes which combined make up 204 levels. The four groups in this set are INTRO, CAVERNS, GETOUT, and UPDOWN.
The INTRO group consist of 5 mazes and form a semi-tutorial of the game. Descriptions of the individual mazes in this group are covered in the tutorial section of the game manual.
The CAVERNS group consists of 8 mazes. These mazes are simple since they contain no doors, secret doors, or locked doors. There are gems, however. These mazes simulate more traditional paper mazes.
The GETOUT group consists of 8 mazes. There are no gems in these mazes. The entire goal of the game is to find the way out of the maze. Many of the mazes require the use of keys and secret doors as part of the solution.
The UPDOWN group consists of 8 mazes. This set represents a true three dimensional maze with movement between various levels being vital to the completion of the maze. WARNING: UPDOWN8.MAZ is exceptionally difficult.
Another thing that really makes Master of the Maze enjoyable for me is how it manages to stay interesting even after playing it multiple times. Many games feel repetitive after a while, but here, the experience still feels fresh because of the small details and different ways you can approach the gameplay. As you continue playing, you naturally start improving and understanding the mechanics better, which makes everything feel more rewarding. I also appreciate the balance the game maintains—it’s not too difficult, but it’s not too easy either. You can play it casually for a short break or spend longer sessions without getting bored. That flexibility is one of the biggest reasons why I keep coming back to Master of the Maze. Overall, it’s the kind of game that doesn’t just entertain you for a moment, but actually gives you a consistently enjoyable experience every time you play.
