The premise of this game is quite simple, you must get four marbles of your color in a row before your opponent does. The row can be oriented either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
The game is played by having each player, in turn, place one of their marbles into a particular column on the board. This is simply done by typing the number of the desired row on the keyboard, after which the marble will roll down to the lowest open position in that column. This will be either the bottom of the column or the top of the last marble placed into that column. The status box in the upper left corner shows whose turn it is to play. Each column can hold up to ten marbles. The first player to get four of their marbles in a straight line wins.
To exit the game at any time during play, simply type Q.

Another thing that really makes Ten Columns enjoyable for me is how it manages to stay interesting even after playing it multiple times. Many games feel repetitive after a while, but here, the experience still feels fresh because of the small details and different ways you can approach the gameplay. As you continue playing, you naturally start improving and understanding the mechanics better, which makes everything feel more rewarding. I also appreciate the balance the game maintains—it’s not too difficult, but it’s not too easy either. You can play it casually for a short break or spend longer sessions without getting bored. That flexibility is one of the biggest reasons why I keep coming back to Ten Columns. Overall, it’s the kind of game that doesn’t just entertain you for a moment, but actually gives you a consistently enjoyable experience every time you play.
